Brighton Stages Historic EFL Cup Comeback Against Manchester United
Manchester United suffered another blow, exiting the EFL Cup after Brighton completed a thrilling comeback. Despite an early two-goal lead at Old Trafford, Michael Carrick's team conceded three times to a resurgent Brighton.
Brighton pulled one back before halftime and then scored twice in quick succession after the break, with Pascal Gross and Maxim de Cuyper sealing a memorable victory. This marks the first time United has lost at home after leading by two goals since November 1976.
The match began brightly for United. Teenager Shae Lacey opened the scoring with a powerful shot from inside the area. Mason Mount quickly followed with his first goal of 2026, doubling United's advantage from a rebound just 46 seconds later.
However, Brighton fought back. Charalampos Kostoulas found the net in first-half stoppage time, chipping the ball through Karl Darlow's legs. Pascal Gross then equalized with a strike from a loose ball. Substitute Maxim de Cuyper completed the comeback, latching onto a pass from Kostoulas to score the winning goal.
While Manchester United, a six-time League Cup winner, exits the competition, Brighton continues their pursuit of a first major trophy. Youngster Lacey was a bright spot for United, though fellow prospect JJ Gabriel was absent. Reports suggest the 15-year-old Gabriel has requested to leave the club due to a strained relationship between his family and United management.
