Liverpool Secure Barcelona Defender Araujo on Loan

Liverpool have reportedly agreed to a loan deal for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo. According to Fabrizio Romano, the clubs have reached a verbal agreement, which has been sanctioned by Barcelona's sporting director, Deco. The loan agreement includes an option for a permanent transfer.

Personal terms between Araujo and Liverpool are also understood to have been finalized.

This move comes as a direct response to a significant injury crisis at the back for Liverpool, leaving new manager Andoni Iraola with severely limited defensive options entering the start of the Premier League campaign.

The defensive ranks have been depleted by the departure of Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid on a free transfer. Jeremy Jacquet, who was signed from Rennes for £55 million, is still recovering from a shoulder injury. Giovanni Leoni, acquired to be a long-term partner for Virgil van Dijk, has suffered an ACL tear and is expected to miss the initial months of the season. Additionally, Joe Gomez sustained another setback during the pre-season victory over Sunderland.

Consequently, Liverpool finds itself in a position with no fit and available senior center-backs in the immediate future, making the acquisition of Araujo a crucial step to address this emergency.

Liverpool Prioritizes Experience

The Uruguayan international is 27 years old and stands at 6 feet 3 inches. He has been a part of Barcelona's setup for seven seasons, having joined from Boston River in 2018. During his tenure at the Camp Nou, Araujo has made 162 appearances across all competitions, securing two La Liga titles in the 2022-23 and 2024-25 seasons. He has also demonstrated his versatility by playing at right-back when required.

However, his role at Barcelona saw a considerable reduction last season. He started only 11 of his 24 league appearances, with Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, and Gerard Martin being favored at different points. Despite contributing three goals from set pieces, Araujo lost his guaranteed starting position under manager Hansi Flick.

Injuries have been a recurring issue throughout Araujo's time at Barcelona. He suffered a serious adductor tendon injury in September 2022, which led to him missing the World Cup in Qatar. He also dealt with a knee problem at the end of last season, an ankle injury in February 2025, and an illness-related absence in November 2025.
