Premier League Pre-Season Matches: Updates and Results
Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Tottenham, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest, continued their pre-season preparations on Sunday. The Magpies faced Strasbourg at home, while the Reds took on Como at Anfield, and Forest encountered Brest at the City Ground. Spurs played a training match against Hoffenheim, following their 3-0 victory against the same German club the previous day.
Tottenham vs. Hoffenheim: Maddison's Return in a Draw
James Maddison made an immediate, albeit unfortunate, impact in his first appearance for Tottenham in nearly a year after recovering from a serious knee injury. He conceded a penalty while attempting to recover possession from Hoffenheim's Leon Avdullahu. Adam Hlozek converted the spot-kick, but Ben Davies quickly equalized, heading in a cross from new £85 million signing Mateus Fernandes. Seventeen-year-old Luca Williams-Barnett gave Spurs a half-time lead with a curling shot, only for Valentin Gendrey's volley to secure a 2-2 draw for Hoffenheim. Kevin Danso also hit the crossbar from Williams-Barnett's cross.
Tottenham Team: Brandon Austin, Tye Hall, Kevin Danso, Ben Davies, Souza (Harry Byrne 69'), Mateus Fernandes, Pape Matar Sarr (Jamie Donley 87'), Rodrigo Bentancur, Luca Williams-Barnett (Tyrese Hall 87'), James Maddison (Reiss Elliott-Parris 46'), Damola Ajayi (Miracle Adewole 69').
Newcastle vs. Strasbourg: Magpies Suffer Penalty Shootout Loss
Following their Saturday loss to Leverkusen, Newcastle United hosted Ligue 1 club Strasbourg. William Osula put the Magpies ahead in the 38th minute from a Jacob Murphy cross. Gessime Yassine scored the second-half equalizer past Ewen Jaouen, who was making his home debut alongside Aladji Bamba and Bazoumana Toure in the 1-1 draw. Yassine also struck the crossbar before the penalty shootout, where Newcastle missed three spot-kicks, allowing Strasbourg to claim the VisitMalta Weekender trophy.
Newcastle Team: Ewen Jaouen, Fabian Schar (Miodrag Pivas 46'), Trevan Sanusi, Henry Johnson, Aladji Bamba, William Osula, Bazoumana Toure, Jacob Murphy (Sean Neave 75'), Joe Willock (Rory Finneran 87'), Dan Burn (Henry Johnson 46'), Dylan Charlton, Jacob Ramsey, Leo Shahar.
Nottingham Forest vs. Brest: Wood and Netz Score in Victory
Nottingham Forest fielded a significantly different team compared to their recent win against Leverkusen. Chris Wood opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Luca Netz was fouled by Mama Balde. February signing Netz doubled the lead before half-time, slotting home from Nicolas Dominguez's pass, securing a 2-0 victory. Callum Hudson-Odoi continued his return from injury for Forest, who also gave a debut to goalkeeper Steven Benda at halftime.
Forest Team: John Victor, Zach Abbott, Jair Cunha, Morato, Eric da Silva Moreira, Xaver Schlager, Nicolas Dominguez, Luca Netz, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Arnaud Kalimuendo, Chris Wood.
Liverpool vs. Como: Gakpo and Jacquet on Target
Goals from Cody Gakpo and Jeremy Jacquet in the first half secured a 2-0 home victory for Liverpool against fellow Champions League qualifiers Como. A detailed match report is available separately.
