Iraola Hails Anfield Atmosphere as Mac Allister Leads Liverpool to Champions League Victory
Andoni Iraola expressed his satisfaction with his players' performance following Liverpool's 2-1 triumph over Atletico Madrid in their Champions League opener. Marcos Llorente initially put the visitors ahead in the 17th minute, but Dominik Szoboszlai equalized before halftime, and Alexis Mac Allister secured the win five minutes into the second half.
However, the victory was marred by a calf injury sustained by summer signing Bradley Barcola in the second half.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Iraola acknowledged the challenging start to the match but lauded his team's resilience. "Difficult to ask for more," he stated. "I think we have shown big character, especially the players after a difficult start. I loved it, the atmosphere has been incredible and I feel lucky to experience it."
The Spanish manager admitted to being caught off guard by Atletico's tactical approach. "I have to take blame from the beginning because they surprised me a little bit tactically, they played a five at the back, a 5-3-2," he confessed. "We expected something different and waited to correct it. After half-time, we had a much better game, we pressed better, and I think we have been a better team."
Mac Allister's decisive goal was particularly significant considering the recent controversy surrounding his contract negotiations. He had publicly voiced his disappointment at not being offered a new deal, unlike teammates Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch.
Iraola commended both goalscorers, remarking, "Yes, lovely goal for him and from Dominik. They ran a lot. Alexis has been very smart – I think it was a very cheap first yellow. They were putting pressure to find the second one. He is a smart player and he could survive that."
