West Ham Signs Celtic Midfielder Engels in Record EFL Transfer

West Ham has finalized the acquisition of Arne Engels from Celtic for £22 million, marking him as the most expensive signing in Championship history. The Belgian international has committed to a five-year contract with the Hammers, who are gearing up for their first season in the second tier since 2012 following their relegation from the Premier League.

This transfer fee surpasses the previous Championship record of £17.5 million, which Ipswich Town paid for Sindre Walle Egeli last summer. However, Engels will not be immediately available for his West Ham debut, meaning he will miss the opening-day fixture against Burnley.

His first potential appearance is expected to be against Charlton Athletic at the London Stadium on August 22. The 22-year-old midfielder joins West Ham after two successful seasons with Celtic, where he contributed to consecutive Scottish Premiership titles. During his tenure with the Glasgow club, Engels played 100 matches, scoring 17 goals and providing 22 assists, after his move from Augsburg in August 2024. He is a product of the Club Brugge academy.

Engels' Arrival Caps Busy Summer for West Ham

Engels is West Ham's fourth acquisition of the summer, following the signings of Venezuelan midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, Dutch defender Joel Veltman, and Israeli winger Manor Solomon. Nils Koppen, West Ham's director of player recruitment, expressed confidence that Engels aligns with the club's objectives for an immediate return to the Premier League.

"Arne is someone we have been following for some time and identified as a key target," Koppen stated on the club's website. "Despite his age, he possesses considerable experience and has demonstrated his ability to perform consistently at a major club. He has the qualities, both on and off the pitch, that we seek as we build for the future."

Engels, who has earned four caps for Belgium, is eager to embrace the challenge of helping West Ham secure promotion. "It's a really exciting project to be a part of," he commented. "The main objective is to get back to the Premier League. That's what everyone wants. Now it's down to me to help the team achieve that, and hopefully, we can have a really good season together with the supporters."
